Contrary to popular beliefs, civil activism and civil society has managed to thrive in the Middle einsteinium. complaisant movements on a variety of topics have occurred despite the lack of democracy and democratic institutions in certain countries. One popular movement was the Arab Baath endeavour which eventually led to the formation of the Baath Party. By analyzing the movements history, ideological stance, goals, the actors, dissenters, and international aspect, one can determine how and why the movement flourished in Syria. Syria was allow de jure independence from the French in 1941. However, the country was not truly independent until 1946. For the next twenty-five years, the country would be launched into extreme political instability and political party factionalism. In the beginning, the parties were moderate and pushed for economic and social reforms to match. But, as the 1940s came to an end, these liberal parties lost their authenticity. The rural workers and urban poor were growing unhappy with the current plead of affairs and started advocating for more radical changes in the political and economic realm.During this time period, Baathism, which eventually evolved into the Arab Baath Party in 1947, became very prominent in the Arab world. Dante and Virgils Relationship in Canto XIV of Dantes Inferno In Canto XIV of Dantes Inferno, Virgil describes the statue of the Old slice of Crete. Dante uses the Old Man of Crete as a metaphor for Virgils legacy in order to elucidate the nature of Dantes and Virgils relationship.In the beginning of the metaphor, Dante carefully and methodically illustrates the grandeur of the Greek empire and Roman civilization. Mount Ida was once chosen, Virgil explains, as a trusted cradle/ by nandu for her son (XIV.100-101). According to Roman mythology, Rhea gave birth to Zeus, who ultimately became the father of all Greek gods and mortal heroes and served as the cornerstone of Greek civilization. Crete, thus, is the cradle or birthplace of Greek civilization. In the Aeneid, Crete is also the birthplace of the Roman civilization, a concept that is important because it already begins to point to the greatness of Virgil and his homeland. The position of the statue of the Old Man provides a str aightforward glimpse of the status of Rome and the legacy of Virgil. Standing straight and erect (XIV.104), the Old Man looks at Rome with his back morose toward Damietta (XIV.104-105). The statues back faces Damietta, an ancient city in Egypt. This precise detail makes it clear that Dante the poet wants his contemporary readers to have that Rome is the direction towards which society is converging. At the beginning of our project we considered Bertolt Brecht as a possible practitioner for our piece. By using his alienation technique we planned to hit a multi-media field of battle performance. As a collective, we considered doing this by examining relevant topics and implementing a mixture of verbatim theatre and devised script techniques. However, Augusto Boal is the name of the practitioner that we mainly used throughout the show. We chose Boal, because of the nature of his techniques, which allowed us to experiment with various themes and subjects throughout the performance. Our genuine idea was to create a piece that would show how the media can be used as a source of manipulation of the mass population. Furthermore, showing how the government can use this culture medium in their advantage, hence controlling the minds of the masses. We based this idea on Boals techniques that would involve the audiences participation. A member of our group came up with the idea of luring the audience into believing that something is real, when in fact it was completely made-up by our group. By using Boals theatre techniques such as Forum Theatre, dud System, Newspaper Theatre and Image Theatre we set out to convince our audience that the British government are planning to release into the atmosphere a new chemical compound called E307 that slows down cells degeneration, thus making people live longer and be healthier. The E307 compound stemmed from our initial idea to create a gas called Anarchy Gas that would have been used to counteract and absorb some of the nuclear radiation over Ukraine after the Chernobyl Disaster in 1986 and eventually speed up the neutralization process. Shylock, the Hated Jew of The Merchant of Venice Many of William Shakespeares plays have sparked controversy. Probably the superstar that has sparked the most controversy is The Merchant of Venice, which many intellectuals have dubbed an anti-Semitic play. The tone that this intelligence centers around is Shylock, the rich moneylender Jew. The problem with most of these anti-Semitic arguments is that they lack the perspective of the one-sixteenth century audience. Throughout Shakespeares The Merchant of Venice (M of V), the audiences perception of Shylock moves mingled with utter hatred and varying amounts of pity. In contrast to todays audience, the original sixteenth century audience saw Shylocks religion as his biggest shortcoming. Our first glimpse of Shylocks character comes in Act I, scene 3, where Shylock reveals to the audience why he hates Antonio. The first reason he gives of why he hates Antonio is because he is a Christian. (I. iii. 43) This to the si xteenth century audience would be unreasonable, and this would evoke a sort of villainy towards Shylock. But a few moments later, the audience witnesses Shylocks speech about Antonios abuses towards Shylock. (I. iii. 107-130) This speech does tumefy in invoking the audiences pity, however little it might be in the sixteenth century. But again at the end, Shylock offers that Antonio give up a lb of flesh as penalty of forfeiture of the bond, which Antonio sees as a joke, but which Shylock fully intends to collect. Methods and Materials Start off, by gathering all of the necessary materials for the beginning which is 1. 2 mL of gel buffer in one graduated cylinder, in a separate graduated cylinder58. 8 mL of water and 0. 48 g of agarose powder. Next take an Erlenmeyer flask and flick all three of the substances, place the flask on a hot plate and keep swooshing the mixture in the flask. Repeat that step until the liquid in the hot plate becomes clear, make sure that the solution does not boil.Let the solution sit until it is lukewarm. Now, the molding tray should be prepared by taping off the sides with painters tape measure so no liquid can escape. Place the comb in the designated slot in the molding tray and pour the agarose solution into the mold tray. Now, take a graduated cylinder and pour in 8 mL of the buffer solution and 400 mL of water, then, pour it into the gel box. After the gel solidifies, with utmost(a) caution, remove the painters tape an d comb. Next, take the mold tray and place it on the table now, take six disposable pipettes and the colored dye from you t to each oneer and fill each pipette with a different color.After each pipette has a different color, empty the pipette not too far in or too close to the surface of each well. Next, place the mold tray in the gel box, close the lid, and plug it in for about a half an hour. After the half an hour is up, take a couple pictures of the mold tray and the results that you saw. Results Figure 1 Figure 2 As you see in figure 1, the dye pigments have been placed in each well and it is not perfect some of the dye have gotten out and leaked out on the top of the gel.That is okay though because the experiment was still a success because the dye pigments did move with the DNA molecules as you can see in figure 2. The dye pigments in all of the wells except for the well at the very top, all moved towards the positive side of the tray. The well at the very top contained posit ively charged DNA so that DNA started to move towards the negative side of the tray. Discussion For the most part, my hypothesis was correct, I was correct about the smaller particles moving besides than the larger particles. I was correct and incorrect when I said that The DNA molecules are going to be negative. I as correct because five out of six were negative, although there was one that was positive so it did not go in the same billing as the other five. DNAs direction is only influenced by one factor, which is whether the DNA is negatively or positively charged. This directly affects why the DNA moved the positive pole because DNA is negative so due to attraction it goes to the positive side of the pole. When a molecule is moving its rate of length and speed correlates with its size, if a molecule of DNA is large, it is going to be harder for it to move so it would be much easier for a small molecule of DNA to move across the gel.You can the molecules of DNA moving because t hey are dyed with the dye pigments. Electrophoresis causes the smaller DNA molecules to move further because it is easier for the positive charge to pull smaller pieces of DNA. Though, for this to happen, the power has to be turned on. in one case the power is turned on it also turns on each ends charge on each side of the tray so the DNA is attracted to that side of the tray. Most of the DNA the molecules carried a negative charge. A negative charge is carried because those molecules went towards the positive pole.Although those few molecules carried a positive charge so they went to the negative pole. The band patterns in the gel are determined by the size of the DNA molecule. It can be interpreted as some of the DNA molecules werent scurvy down as small as others. Scientists use the number of nucleotides in one sample and it is compared to another blood sample. All of the similarities and differences add up. Also the sequences of the bases in a chain of DNA. In many murder inves tigations, DNA is used to find the culprit. Such as the case of James Anagnos, James was beaten and stabbed to conclusion in 1977 in his bar. It didnt serve any justice though, because Wright died in 2002. This is similar to the case of Priscilla Ann Blevins. Priscillas remains were found off an interstate and they were stored in a facility and kept under the name Jane Doe. (Lohr) Blevins genetic information was entered into a computer and it matched up with Jane Doe and was later confirmed with dental records.DNA helped to break down this 37 year old cold case just like it did for the 1993 murder of Alie Berrelez. Alie was a five year old girl who was sitting in her apartment complex eating pizza when she was kidnapped. (Curry) Alies remains were found four days later stashed next to a creek. Nick Stof er was the main untrusting but they couldnt arrest him because they didnt have enough evidence against him. When this crime happened there was no such thing as DNA interrogatory so there was no way they could prove it was him.
